About us

The Department of English came into existence with the establishment of the college as a degree college in 1947. Beginning as an undergraduate department, it attained the status of a Postgraduate Department in 1973 and has been offering Doctoral Programme since 2000. One of the most popular Departments of the college because of its faculty and the quality of teaching, it was shaped and nurtured by a galaxy of academicians and scholars namely Mr. Hriday Narayan Singh, founder Principal of the College. Mr. T.K. Dutta, Mr. Mrityunjay Singh, Mr. Chanda Singh, Mr. Paras Nath Singh and others. Its scholastic and academic tradition was further strengthened by Dr. D.R. Singh, Dr. Gyananand Shukla and Dr. Prabhakar Singh, who had distinguished themselves in various domains of English studies.

Today, the Department of English has the privilege of being one the premier Departments of English in the colleges of Uttar Pradesh. Its rich academic, research and innovative character has won it a distinct position of its own in the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh. It has been incessantly working towards enriching and strengthening literary and language studies by teaching and guiding research in areas as diverse as British Literature, American Literature, Indian English Literature, Contemporary Literature, and Colonial and Postcolonial Literature. Being the oldest Department of English in V.B.S. Purvanchal University, such academic bodies of the university as Board of Studies and Research Degree Committee are lead by faculty members of the Department. Hence, the Department has the privilege of designing and developing the curriculum of English.

The academic programmes offered by the Department include Undergraduate Programme, Postgraduate Programme and Doctoral Programme. The curriculums of these programmes have been drastically revised in view of the National Education Policy - 2020 to cater to the contemporary needs of students. It is worth mentioning that the curriculum of Postgraduate Programme has been designed as innovative and path-breaking in nature. It includes such optional papers as Translation and Folk Literature, Literature and Environment, Australian and Canadian Literature, Stylistics and Discourse Analysis, Advanced Literary Studies in Films, Theatre and Performing Arts and Genre Fiction.

The Department has been fortunate in terms of the foreign assignments of its faculty members. Mr. Paras Nath Singh was offered a faculty position in the University of Kabul, Afghanistan and stayed there for about one academic year. Dr. Gyanendra Dhar Dubey was offered a faculty position in the University of Sana'a and worked there for two academic sessions. The long list of its distinguished alumni includes Prof. R.P. Singh, former acting Vice-Chancellor, M.G. Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, Prof. K.G. Srivastava, former acting Vice-Chancellor, University of Allahabad, Prayagraj, Mr. Anil Kumar Singh (I.R.S.) and several others.

With the state government's recent sanction of Professorship in government and aided colleges, the Department has got the privilege of having two Professors for the first time : Dr. Vandana Dubey and Dr. Gyanendra Dhar Dubey, who have been promoted as Professors under Career Advancement Scheme.

Words from HoD

The Department has a rich tradition of innovative teaching and research which continues even today. It always strives to cater to the regional aspirations of the people. It is an embodiment of the vision of its great founder Thakur Tilak Dhari Singh to provide affordable and quality education to the students of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The Department has indeed several achievements to boast of, yet we are working harder to take it to new heights of academics and research. We are working on a project to set up a well-equipped language lab to enhance the language skills of students. The Department has constituted a Literary Society that provides a platform for students to participate in Dramatics, Debates, Creative Writing and other co-curricular activities. As faculty, we promote the values of ethics, social justice and inclusiveness in our students.

Brief Activity

The activities in which we engage our students are designed with the motto of "Learning to learn, learning to live and learning to survive". While enriching their minds with knowledge, our students are also trained and counselled in applying their interpretative and research skills for discovering new perspectives and adding on to the existing store of knowledge. At the same time, they are encouraged to use their acumen in getting jobs for themselves in future. They are also engaged in career-oriented brain storming discussions. The NEP-2020 has offered multiple options of co-curricular subjects and Vocational courses to them which will enhance the chances of procuring jobs in future. Our youths are the sinews of the nation, so we instill optimism in their thought processes.
